Why mentions matter, and where they don't
Mention volume measures attention. It says nothing about direction, and nothing about quality. A stock can dominate a subreddit precisely because it is collapsing, and some of the loudest tickers in any given week are loud because something went badly wrong.
Two things make the data useful anyway.
The change matters more than the level. NVIDIA is always discussed; that tells you very little. A small-cap going from three mentions to sixty is a genuine event. That is why the table above shows the day-on-day change rather than just the count.
Attention often arrives before the move completes. Not as a prediction — as a description. When chatter about a name jumps sharply, something usually happened: a contract, an earnings surprise, a policy decision. The mentions are a symptom worth investigating, not a signal to act on.
What Reddit is bad at
Worth being blunt about the limitations, because plenty of sites sell this data as an edge it is not.
- The chatter is noisy. Posts can be ironic, coordinated, spam, or discussing a ticker that happens to share a common word.
- It skews small and volatile. Retail boards over-index on high-beta names, which is why neoclouds and memory usually appear more often than equipment or power stocks.
- It lags the fast money. By the time something is at the top of r/wallstreetbets, institutions have generally seen it.
- Volume is not sentiment. A count of mentions does not tell you whether the posts are bullish or bearish, and inferring one from the other is where most social-sentiment products go wrong.

A stock with heavy chatter and a weak sentiment score is a crowd talking about something the tape has not confirmed. A stock quietly making new highs with almost no mentions is the opposite — a move happening without an audience. Both are more informative than a name where the two simply agree, which usually just means the story is already well known.
