Optical and networking stocks are outperforming quietly - and X has barely noticed
9 August 2026 · 5 min read
The short version: over the five sessions to 7 August 2026, optical and networking posted the strongest median price move of any of the six AI silicon segments - and drew a smaller share of the conversation on X than the only segment that fell. This site counts both numbers itself, which is the only reason the gap is visible at all.
The gap, in one table
Every figure below comes from our own data: post counts queried daily against the X API, prices and the market sentiment score from the live board. The window is the five trading days from 3 to 7 August 2026, covering 131,551 posts across the 34 names we track.
Read the first two columns against each other. Memory took more than a fifth of the week's posts while being the only segment that did not rise. Optical took less than a third of memory's share while posting a median move nearly twice that of AI chips - the segment that absorbed almost half the conversation.
Attention, in other words, was pointed almost exactly away from where the prices moved.
It is not one stock carrying the segment
The obvious objection is that a median can be dragged by a single outlier. It cannot here, because the strength is spread across the group. Every one of the six names rose over the five sessions:
- Coherent (COHR) - +44.2%, sentiment 85, the highest score on the entire 34-name board
- Lumentum (LITE) - +24.7%, sentiment 81
- Credo Technology (CRDO) - +20.7%, sentiment 75
- Marvell Technology (MRVL) - +16.6%, sentiment 72
- Ciena (CIEN) - +9.4%
- Arista Networks (ANET) - +4.6%
Four of the six highest market sentiment readings on the board belong to optical names. The score is built entirely from price and volume - momentum, relative strength, trend, volume, volatility and drawdown - so what it is describing is behaviour, not opinion, and it can be reconstructed from a daily bar series by anyone who wants to check it.
What the quiet actually means, and what it does not
It would be easy to turn this into a claim it cannot support, so here is the boundary.
A low share of posts is not a bullish signal. We tested this across the whole board and found that post volume has a rank correlation of -0.00 with the direction of a day's move - the working is here. Volume of discussion says nothing about direction, and that holds for a quiet name exactly as much as a loud one. Nobody should read "under-discussed" as "under-valued".
What the gap does tell you is something narrower and more useful: the retail conversation is not where the returns were. Memory and neoclouds together took 39% of the week's posts, and between them produced a median move of -0.2% and +6.7%. If your sense of what is working in AI infrastructure comes from a timeline, it was pointed at the wrong two segments last week.
There is a second, duller possibility worth stating: optical simply has fewer retail-famous tickers. Nobody is building a following posting about Lumentum. Coherent has no meme constituency. That is a plausible structural reason for the gap, and it does not require any story about the crowd being wrong.
The limits of this
Five trading days is a small window, and one week does not make a trend. Our X counts began on 3 August 2026, so this is the first full week of the series - we cannot yet say whether optical is persistently under-discussed or whether early August happened to be its week.
Post counts also include automation. X cashtag streams carry bots, signal sellers and engagement farms, and no query filter separates them from real people. Retweets are excluded, which stops a single viral post standing in for thousands of voices, but the counts are of posts and not of accounts.
And none of this is a forecast. The segment that outperformed for five sessions is not thereby the segment that outperforms for the next five.
Where to watch it
The optical and networking segment page carries the sentiment history for the group and its standing against the other five. The X mentions board shows the daily post counts for all 34 names with price and sentiment in the same row, which is where a gap like this one becomes visible in the first place. The daily board has the full 34.
The interesting comparison to keep an eye on is whether the conversation catches up to the price or the price falls back to the conversation. Both would be worth knowing. Only one of them is what most people mean when they say a stock is being overlooked.
Frequently asked questions
What are optical and networking stocks?
Companies making the optical interconnect and networking hardware that moves data between AI accelerators - transceivers, lasers, DSPs and switching silicon. On this board the segment covers Coherent (COHR), Lumentum (LITE), Credo Technology (CRDO), Marvell Technology (MRVL), Arista Networks (ANET) and Ciena (CIEN). As AI clusters grow, the bottleneck shifts from the chips themselves to the links between them, which is why this part of the supply chain tracks the build-out closely.
Which optical stock performed best recently?
Over the five sessions to 7 August 2026, Coherent (COHR) rose 44.2%, the largest move in the segment, followed by Lumentum (LITE) at 24.7% and Credo Technology (CRDO) at 20.7%. All six names in the segment rose over that window. Figures are from our own price feed and will have moved since.
Does low social media attention mean a stock is undervalued?
No. We measured this across all 34 names and found post volume has a rank correlation of -0.00 with the direction of a day's price move. A quiet stock is not thereby a cheap one, and a loud one is not thereby expensive. The only thing a mention count measures is how much a name is being discussed.
How does ChipSentiment count X mentions?
Once a day we query the X API directly and count how many posts carried each ticker's cashtag - $COHR, $LITE and so on - over a complete New York weekday, with retweets excluded. The figures are our own and are not bought from a third-party mention tracker or aggregator. Weekend counts are collected but not displayed, because with the market shut they run at roughly half a weekday across the whole board.
What is the market sentiment score based on?
Price and volume only: momentum, relative strength against the rest of the complex, trend, volume, volatility and drawdown, combined into a 0-100 reading where 50 is neutral. It contains no news and no social data, which is what makes it reconstructable from a daily bar series by anyone who wants to check it.
